Pandemnesia (Pan-dem-NEE-zhuh)

I made up the word PANDEMNESIA to describe the condition of having forgotten what life was like prior to the pandemic.

Every week, as I spend time with leaders and teams from different organizations—public, private, big and small—I recognize work patterns and trends that are a direct result of adaptations made during the pandemic. Adapting to that sudden and drastic paradigm shift, we learned to work remotely, which led to greater flexibility, autonomy, and, in many cases, better work-life integration, as well as greater focus and productivity—ALL wonderful outcomes!

But remote work (even partially remote) also has its costs. We now have:

  • More meetings (back-to-back-to-back Teams and Zoom without a minute to spare), but less quality collaboration
  • More communication (Teams, email, Slack, IMs, text messages and the occasional phone call), but less real connection with our team members
  • More work (quantity) as we manage continuous change, with less focus on what’s most impactful and what will make the biggest difference
  • More choices about where to live, work and play, and less loyalty between employer and employee

Of course, these are NOT universally true, but my experience in multiple organizations tells me that conversations are DIFFERENT now. I hear more about “what’s in it for me?” and less about “how can I add value?”  I hear more about “where’s the accountability?” and less about “how can we inspire?”  I hear more about “is the work getting done?” and less about “lets rally around the goal!”

All of this tells me that we need a RESET, a “do-over" or fresh start. We don’t need to throw out the positive changes made; we’ve come too far. But we could do better.

What if we RECLAIMED our shared values and REVIVED the connectedness between our people? What if we REFOCUSED on our purpose, and inspired energy around our goals, instead of chasing deadlines? What if we RESET?

Let's find a way to retain the best of the changes we've made, and adjust to improve those that were great in a pinch, but now drag us down. Watch my webinar Reset Your Culture: How to Reclaim, Revive & Refocus Your Team, for guidance on how to get this done. The webinar helps you to:
