88. The 4 Kinds of Clarity Every Leader Needs
October 13, 2026
You close the laptop at 6 pm, and your brain goes straight to the list of things that didn't get done. Or you get to Friday, busy every minute, and you can't point to one meaningful thing that moved forward. Or you're tired in a way the workload alone doesn't explain.
Those feelings might be warning lights, and a warning light helps only when you know which system it's pointing to.
In this episode, I walk you through four kinds of clarity: values, strategic, contribution, and outcome. For each one, I share the warning light that can show up when it's missing, where I've felt it myself, and one move to try. Then I ask you to take a breath and notice which light made you wince a little.
Listen Now
The thing you notice (the resentment when another request lands, the exhaustion after a week of nonstop motion, the list that never feels finished) may not be the actual problem. It could be a warning light, pointing to a specific kind of clarity that's missing.
Last week I told you I didn't have a time problem. I had a clarity problem. This week I get more specific, because "get clearer" is a little like telling someone with a lit-up dashboard to "fix the car." Fix what, exactly?
I walk through four kinds of clarity, starting wide and zooming in.
- Values clarity is about your whole life, and for me the warning light here has been resentment.
- Strategic clarity is about the few most important things to work on right now. When it's missing, you can feel like you're running hard and going nowhere.
- Contribution clarity is about putting your strengths to work where they matter most, and its signal can look like feeling drained by work that doesn't fit how you're wired.
- Outcome clarity is about knowing what "done" looks like for any given task.
Then we put all four together and talk about building a rhythm, one that includes real rest and recovery and leaves out the guilt.
If you've ever closed your laptop at the end of a long day and still felt like nothing was finished, this one is for you.
"Clarity isn't one thing. There are four kinds that matter most for leaders. And each one has its own warning light: a specific kind of pain that shows up when that clarity is missing."

About your Host
Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant
Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.
For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).
I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.
I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.
When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.
Let's keep the party going!
We have tons of great episodes waiting for you! Check them out on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
87. You Don't Have a Time Problem: How to Reset Your Focus
You wake up and the day has already started without you. Before your feet hit the floor, you're running the list. The morning walk, the quiet coffee, five minutes to just think — that's the first thing to go, because it feels like a luxury. The list feels like your real responsibility. In this episode, I'm telling you about the morning in 2017 that changed how I saw all of this — and the three questions that turned my chaotic calendar into one I actually love. This isn't about finding more hours. It's about getting honest about which ones deserve your best.
86. Stop Managing Performances. Start Leading People
You've half-composed the correction in your head before the conversation even starts. You know exactly what you're going to say, “you need to show more initiative”, but some part of you already knows it's not going to land the way you want it to. That's because naming the foul isn't the same as building the route.
In this episode, we discuss a different way to run performance conversations; one where you get curious about what's going on before any correction.
