Episode 56: Navigating Low Trust Relationships

March 3, 2025

You've rewritten that email four times — and deep down, you know the problem isn't the email, it's low trust. In this episode, we're getting real about low trust relationships: what they actually feel like, how the spiral happens, and the one mindset shift that can turn it around. Because the path forward doesn't start with the other person — it starts with you.

If you've ever spent 45 minutes rewriting a three-sentence email, wondering if it's too direct, too vague, or just going to get twisted into something unrecognizable — you already know what one expression of low trust feels like.

In this episode, we're getting real about one of the most draining challenges leaders face: relationships where something just feels off.

  • The constant vigilance.
  • The stomach-drop when you see their name on your phone.
  • The exhausting mental gymnastics that never quite turn off.

We'll unpack SIX ways trust gets broken (and how to spot them in yourself, not just others), why waiting for the other person to change keeps you stuck, and two practical approaches for navigating even the most difficult relationships without losing yourself.

This is where your power is. And it starts with one choice.

"If you want to rebuild — bring calm curiosity to the situation and behave from a trusting place. Don't wait for them to fix it. YOU need to be proactive."

Welcome to Episode 56: Navigating Low Trust Relationships

In this episode, Claire explores the dynamics of low-trust relationships — what they feel like, how trust gets broken, and the one thing that stands in the way of your ability to repair.

The Key Insight:

We have a compulsion to blame the trust problem on others and to look to THEM to begin repair. The secret to clarity and the possibility of rebuilding is to bring calm curiosity to the situation and BE the solution yourself.

Key Concepts Covered:

  • The signs (and exhaustion) of low-trust environments
  • The key difference between high-trust and low-trust relationships
  • Six trust-breaking behaviors (informed by DDI training): Avoidance, Broken Commitments, Negative Assumptions, Inconsistency, Doubt & Control, and Self-Interest
  • Downward and upward trust spirals
  • Why changing YOUR interpretation and mindset is the most powerful starting point
  • Using smart trust and clear boundaries when relationships can’t be rebuilt
  • Claire’s personal approach to unworkable relationships

Your Action Step This Week:

Notice how you are interpreting people. When you feel defensive, pause and ask — is there a more generous interpretation? Then BE the solution. Use your best communication skills, treat them with respect, and let the chips fall where they may. If it doesn’t work, set a boundary.

Coming Up:

What happens to teams and organizations when trust is low? We will explore practical strategies for rebuilding trust, and an exciting resource to help you develop these skills.

About your Host

Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant

Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.

For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).

I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.

I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.

When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.

Episode #54: When Feedback is a Love Language

Quality two-way feedback conversations are an investment in healthy relationships. In fact, sharing honest and kind feedback is one of the most loving things you can do for someone. We'll explore why we avoid these conversations, how staying silent is actually unkind, and a simple framework that will make feedback feel more inviting and like a routine exchange.
