Episode 19: You Have the RIGHT to Love Your Job
June 17, 2025
You have the RIGHT to love your job—and I'm going to show you how to claim it. In this bold episode, I challenge the idea that workplace misery is "just the way it is" and share a powerful framework for creating the culture you deserve. Discover your role in building a workplace that's both happy AND highly productive.
Listen Now
We spend a third of our lives at work, yet accept workplace misery as normal. I reject that premise. You have a right to fairness, respect, and meaningful work, but rights without responsibility are just complaints.
I reveal three roles everyone plays: Owner (orienting energy toward happiness AND productivity), Manager (establishing expectations and protecting culture), and Producer (bringing your best self daily). Using my happiness-productivity matrix, you'll assess which quadrant your workplace occupies and your contribution to both dimensions.
For toxic environments, I share seven proven strategies: build relationships, focus on solutions over complaints, use data, not emotions, make small proposals, find leadership allies, document efforts, and model desired behaviors.
Give these 6-9 months before considering an exit strategy. Your life energy deserves better, but transformation starts with taking ownership of your role.

"You are literally trading your life energy - hours and days, and years of your one precious life - to produce value for others. That trade should honor your humanity. It should energize you, not drain you."

About your Host
Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant
Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.
For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).
I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.
I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.
When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.

Let's keep the party going!
