75. Learn Like A Leader
July 14, 2026
You are learning all the time! You listen to podcasts, read books and articles, take courses, attend conferences…. But how much of what you learn is really sticking? How much is translating into actionable insights that change the way you learn and lead?Â
If you feel like much of your learning is lost in translation, you're not imagining it. Consuming content and really learning are very different things.
In this episode, I share two personal experiences that transformed how I approach learning and how the same principles can help you accelerate your leadership growth so you can feel a real sense of progress.

You're already investing in your growth. You listen to podcasts on your commute, read leadership books, go to conferences, save articles you'll "get back to," and sign up for webinars with every intention of actually attending.
So why does it still feel like so little of it really sticks and makes a measurable difference in your day-to-day leadership?
In this episode, I explore the gap between consuming information and engaging in structured learning and why so many of us quietly get in the consumption loop. Furthermore, I share the mindset shift that transformed the way I approach growth through two personal stories- one about finally making progress learning Spanish and another about finding an unexpected community of peers.
Along the way, you'll discover why structure creates the foundation for lasting growth, why community accelerates it, and why leadership development isn't about collecting more ideas. It's about creating the conditions for those ideas to become part of who you are.
Most importantly, I explore how your willingness to keep learning gives your team permission to do the same. Because when leaders are open to growth, curiosity becomes contagious, feedback becomes safer, and learning becomes part of the culture instead of something that only happens in a classroom.
"Learning is not a sign of weakness at your level. It is the prerequisite for impact at your level."

About your Host
Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant
Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.
For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).Â
I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.
I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.
When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.
Let's keep the party going!
We have tons of great episodes waiting for you! Check them out on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
74. The Language of Trust
Most of us pay close attention to what we say as leaders. Far fewer of us notice the subtle messages hidden in how we say it. Â
In this episode, I share a simple, time-tested framework that reveals how small shifts in your language, sometimes just a single word, can mean the difference between triggering defensiveness, and building the kind of trust where people feel safe to speak honestly. Once you hear these patterns, you'll start noticing them everywhere... especially in yourself.

73. Driving For Clarity
Everyone agrees that clarity matters. But what nobody likes to admit is that clarity is slippery, and it expires quickly. One of the most persistent jobs in leadership is creating clarity for your team - over and over and over again.
In this episode, I share a practical framework to help you continuously drive for clarity by communicating your vision, framing your standards of behavior, developing clear metrics and milestones, and working with your team to surface the countless assumptions that shape how work actually gets done.
