"People are going to contribute at the level they feel safe to contribute. And when that safety isn't there, silence becomes the default."

Meet our Guest

Janet Williams is the Founder of Progressive Discoveries, a leadership and culture consulting firm that helps organizations strengthen leadership clarity, decision making, and workplace culture, with no shame and no blame.

With more than twenty-five years of experience in leadership development and organizational effectiveness, Janet works with complex systems, including health plans and service organizations, to address the intersection of leadership behavior, organizational structure, and psychological safety.

Her work centers on helping leaders see how their habits, communication patterns, and decision-making practices shape team performance over time. Through tools such as the Leadership Mode Snapshot™ and the Psychological Safety Pulse Check™, she supports leaders in translating insight into practical, sustained shifts in how they lead and operate.

Janet’s approach is grounded in the belief that leadership clarity and psychological safety are inseparable, particularly in environments where the stakes are high and the pressure is constant.

Before founding Progressive Discoveries, Janet held senior leadership roles in both enterprise and industry settings, including Director of the Aveda Institute, Washington DC, and Senior Director of Operations Education for Dessange North America.

She is known for her ability to bring clarity to complex leadership dynamics and to help leaders navigate difficult conversations in a way that is both practical and human.

Building Psychological Safety with Janet Williams

Welcome, Leader! Telling your team “it’s safe to speak up” isn’t enough to make it through. In this episode, Janet Williams, founder of Progressive Discoveries and a 25-year veteran of complex, high-stakes organizations, joins me to unpack what psychological safety in an organization really is.

Here's what we dig into:

  • Why silence is a signal, not a personality trait. When people stop talking, leaders lose access to their team's best thinking, and often don't even know it's happening.
  • Trust is the copilot. Janet unpacks Stephen Covey's emotional bank account concept and explains why safety can't exist without consistent, daily deposits of trust.
  • Timothy Clark's Four Stages of Psychological Safety- inclusion, learner, contributor, and challenger safety. We also chat about why Janet believes learner safety is the most critical for today's fast-changing organizations.
  • The problem with putting people on the spot in meetings. A simple fix: share your agenda questions in advance so people can come prepared and contribute thoughtfully.
  • Why assessment beats assumption. If you want to know where your team actually stands, a third-party instrument will get you honest answers that a direct conversation won't.

Psychological safety in the workplace isn’t soft. It’s what makes everything else work.

About your Host

Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant

Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.

For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).

I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.

I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.

When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.
