Episode 43: Navigating Change

December 2, 2025

I had a bit of a breakdown last week - snapped at my husband over something that really wasn't about him at all. Turns out, when you're navigating multiple changes (even good ones!), your brain is working overtime in ways you don't realize. I'll walk you through what's really happening when change hits, and give you a simple exercise to map what you're carrying so you can actually take care of yourself through it.

You know that feeling when you wake up just... off? Irritable, exhausted, but you can't pinpoint why?

Here's the truth: when you're navigating multiple changes - even positive ones - your brain is processing threats you don't realize are there. In this episode, I share my own messy breakdown and introduce two powerful frameworks that illuminate what's happening during change.

You'll learn about the SCARF model and the three phases of transition (from William Bridges), and you'll get a practical Change Heat Map exercise that will help you understand your personal change landscape. Because when you're in the midst of change and feeling emotional, you're not being irrational –you're being human. Let's explore together!

"You can be grateful AND struggling. You can be excited AND overwhelmed. You can be handling it AND need support. These things can coexist."

Welcome to Episode 43: Navigating Change

Change is exhausting - even when it's good change. In this episode, I share a story about my own emotional roller coaster and walk you through the neuroscience and psychology of why navigating change hits us harder than we think. You'll learn practical frameworks to understand what's happening in your brain and a simple exercise to map your own personal landscape of change so you can take better care of yourself through transitions.

In this episode, you'll hear about:

  • The SCARF Model: Neuroscientist David Rock's framework reveals five ways your brain perceives threat during change - Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness. Understanding these helps you recognize why you're feeling "off."
  • Change vs. Transition: William Bridges teaches us that change is external (the event), but transition is internal (the psychological journey). You can't skip the hard middle part.
  • The Three Phases of Transition: Every change involves an Ending (letting go), a Neutral Zone (the uncomfortable in-between), and a New Beginning. You might be in different phases for different changes happening simultaneously.
  • Why Positive Change Still Registers as Stress: Your brain doesn't distinguish between good and bad change - it all requires adaptation, and adaptation requires energy.
  • The Change Heat Map Exercise: A practical three-step process to list your changes, feel the feelings without judgment, and visualize what you're navigating across four quadrants (positive/negative and chosen/imposed).

Highlights of the Episode:

  1. My Personal Emotional Roller Coaster Story: How an innocent comment from my husband triggered an emotional reaction - and what it taught me about the invisible weight of navigating multiple changes.
  2. The SCARF Threat Response: Learn which of the five areas might be activated for you right now and why that matters for your emotional regulation.
  3. The Power of Naming Emotions: Using Brené Brown's Atlas of the Heart to move beyond "stressed" or "overwhelmed" and identify the nuance of what you're actually feeling.
  4. Three Practical Strategies:
    • Lower Your Expectations: Give yourself permission to operate at 75% during seasons of significant change
    • Create Quiet Presence: Release tension through breathing, exercise, or time in nature
    • Lean Into Your Support Network: Build deep, honest friendships with self-aware people who can hold space for your messiness

About your Host

Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant

Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.

For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).

I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.

I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working Genius® - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.

When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.

Episode #42: A Love Letter to Life: A Thanksgiving Reflection

In this episode, I share a simple practice that changed everything for me—one that helps you notice the beauty already surrounding you and naturally extends to genuine gratitude for the people in your life. This isn't about forced gratitude or toxic positivity. It's about training yourself to see what's right and good, so you can lead with more hope, resilience, and joy.
