Episode #35: Developing Influence and Impact: A Leader's Guide with Salvatore Manzi
33:00

"My number one principle of communication is "you then me". I need to be able to talk about you, your hopes, your fears, your desires, your understanding of this, what you are bringing to this conversation so that I can build relevance before I move into my agenda." - Salvatore Manzi

Meet our Guest

Salvatore Manzi is a leadership communications coach and speaker who helps quiet, data-driven leaders bring complex ideas to life with clarity and confidence. Drawing on cognitive psychology and neuroscience, he teaches practical strategies that turn expertise into messages people can absorb and act on. His signature principle, ‘You then Me,’ helps speakers connect with their audience by opening every talk and meeting focused on the listener’s needs before the speaker’s agenda. He has coached speakers who presented at the United Nations, guided four founders successfully through Y-Combinator, and supported one presidential candidate, several CEO’s and other public officials. His clients include financial advisors who secured $220 million in fundraising, $100 million over their goal.

A lifelong digital nomad and public speaker, he was inspired by his father’s conference work, and brings both craft and care to every engagement. "Clear and Compelling" distills the frameworks Salvatore uses with technical teams to help leaders communicate in ways that earn attention and move decisions.

Highlights from this episode:

In this conversation with communication expert Salvatore Manzi, we explore how analytical minds and introverted leaders can transform technical brilliance into authentic influence.

The Foundation: Presence = Comfort + Authenticity

Salvatore defines presence as the intersection of comfort and authenticity—being comfortable being yourself while knowing your topic, understanding your audience, and communicating from that genuine center.

The "You Then Me" Framework

The core principle that transforms communication effectiveness:

  • Start with understanding your audience's hopes, fears, and perspectives
  • Build relevance before moving to your agenda
  • Create connection that opens people to hearing your message

This approach emerged from Salvatore's breakthrough moment mediating between feuding executives, where requiring acknowledgment before response completely shifted the dynamic.

Above or Below the Decision Line

One of the most powerful concepts was helping people understand whether they're "above the decision line" (in ideation mode) or "below the decision line" (in activation or implementation mode). This clarity helped everyone understand how to contribute their genius at the right time.

Breaking the Technical Brilliance Trap

Many analytical leaders try to download everything they know to convince others. But the brain is a meaning-making device, not a precision recording device. People need relevance before they can process complex information.

Key Strategies:

  • Connection before content—help teams connect with their personal why
  • Use dialogue, not download
  • Practice frameworks in low-stakes situations first

The Uncertainty Framework

When you can't share all details: "This is what we know, what we don't know, what I believe, what I'm committed to, and what you can do."

Mastering Q&A Sessions

Prepare with pocket questions, address the elephant in the room, and use the three-step process: acknowledge why their question matters, then pivot to your response. The acknowledgment step is crucial for building rapport.

About your Host

Claire Laughlin, MA, Organizational Development Consultant

Hi! I'm Claire Laughlin, and I love helping leaders like you create workplaces where people truly thrive.

For over two decades, I've been rolling up my sleeves alongside teams and organizations, using hands-on methods that actually work (because let's face it - theory only gets you so far!).

I specialize in teaching leaders how to engage their teams, helping managers become more effective facilitators, and showing people how to work better together.

I'm also a master facilitator for the Six Types of Working GeniusÂŽ - a fantastic tool that helps you understand and leverage your natural talents.

When I'm not helping leaders like you build happy, high-energy workplaces, I'm enjoying a hike in the forest with my dog Fiona, spending time with my family or curled up with a great book.
